Industrial CASE PhD Studentship at Brunel University and GSK
Applications are invited for a 4 year EPSRC/CASE PhD studentship at Brunel University in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The studentship provides a unique opportunity to receive high quality research training in collaboration with one of the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical companies. The successful applicant will join the Department of Information Systems and Computing (ranked top in its field in terms of 'Research Power' in RAE-2008) and will be under the supervision of Professor Xiaohui Liu and Professor David Gilbert at Brunel University, London. The student will benefit from a multidisciplinary research environment incorporating the Centre for Intelligent Data Analysis (http://www.brunel.ac.uk/siscm/disc/research/cida), the Centre for Systems and Synthetic Biology (http://www.brunel.ac.uk/research/centres/cssb) and the Computational Biology Department at GSK's Medicine Research Centre at Stevenage.
The successful applicant will use advanced machine learning and intelligent data analysis methods to explore and model the relationships between protein interactions, gene expression profiles and chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative colitis). The studentship offers a unique prospect to contribute to our understanding of the human epigenome and the development of personalised medicines.
The ideal candidate will have an excellent background in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, bioinformatics or related discipline and a strong interest in genomics. Good programming skills are also required. Applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English. The studentship offers an enhanced £18,000 per annum tax free stipend.
