PhD Studentship
Risk based surveillance (RBS) is a rapidly growing field in infectious disease surveillance and control. Epidemiological models are used to target surveillance activities on higher risk groups of animals or individuals. It offers the opportunity to increase the efficiency and speed with which disease surveillance activities will detect and track animal disease outbreaks. However several issues arise from current theoretical strategies. This project will explore the impact of these issues of surveillance design and use these results to suggest further strategies to increase the efficiency and robustness of disease surveillance programmes.
The project requires a blend of quantitative epidemiology skills with the ability to interact with other members of wider research project and relevant stakeholders. Much of the work will be simulation and statistical model based so either the ability to program in a suitable language or an aptitude to learn will be essential. A broader interest in the UK’s agricultural systems, infectious disease, economics and politics would be desirable qualities.
