Things may have moved on, but when we did a rebuild about 10 years ago we went for a gantry in resus. The reason behind this was that the quality of films was better than with a mobile machine. I'm not sure what the greater scope that can be done with mobile machines is: our gantry gives us the same scope as in the department x-ray room (i.e. most plain films but not things like OPGs). Also not sure about the portable machine being easier to use: our gantry seems remarkably easy to use (and because most stuff is high up, it takes up less floor space)
