Also a shame to see that 'Nature Navigator' (nee A Citizens Tree of Life) is also offline (or elsewhere - can't find any replacement). We put an OAI harvester over it using 'Darwin Core - alike' metadata (since also turned off), but I'm not even sure the (Nat Hist) Museum really understood it never mind a wider audience!
The nearest thing we came to something useful out of it was a 'common names lookup' whereby I scraped tens of thousands of common animal / plant names off the web and other open db's and mapped them to species in the core OAI repository. It worked to aid finding images, nodes in the 'Tree' and collection records, but was never realy 'pushed' for public use. Fundamentally, the move was to more 'interpreted' views of content (e.g. NMOLP) and less 'geeky' data-centric stuff.
