Dear Paul,
thank you for this message. However, I must say I was a little surprised when I heard about the development of BAFTSS, as were my colleagues. In our experience TV, film and screen studies were always well accommodated within MeCCSA, and so a further group seemed a little, well, redundant.
I was wondering if you could provide further information regarding the BAFTSS initiative and how it differs from (and compliments) MeCCSA?
best wishes

Subject: MeCCSA & BAFTSS: A Response to the Executive
It is with considerable regret that I read the statement issued by the MeCCSA Executive in response to the BAFTSS initiative as this misrepresents the spirit with which BAFTSS has been launched. Since I was first alerted to the formation of BAFTSS, I have observed how those involved with steering the initiative have consistently emphasized how the association seeks to complement rather than compete with MeCCSA. If I understand correctly, I believe representatives of BAFTSS have contacted members of the MeCCSA Executive on exactly that basis. It is therefore disappointing to read the statement from the MeCCSA Executive which adopts a defensive and dismissive tone, suggesting there is already a conflict between MeCCSA and BAFTSS when there is not. While articulating concerns about a split in the field, the statement made by the Executive actually appears to cultivate such a split. I'm therefore deeply concerned by the unnecessarily antagonistic and misleading way in which the Executive have chosen to represent BAFTSS. Personally, I value the aims of both MeCCSA and BAFTSS, and so will continue to remain a member of both as I believe they share similar but not identical purposes.
