ABSTRACT
Taking up cycling requires a good deal of prior preparation and a fair
degree of determination. Issues to master include clothing and bicycle
selection, ways of dealing with baggage and then deciding on a route which
may be determined by one's own perceived skill and fitness level. This
seminar explores issues around route selection linked with perceived risk
and effort and begins to show how these may be more important than has
hitherto been considered in transport planning. It draws on research on
commuters observed speed and acceleration characteristics and work on
perceptions of routes and junctions. The question and answer session will be
focused on how the findings might be translated into guidance for
infrastructure providers and transport planners.
About the speaker
After graduating from Imperial College, John Parkin worked for consulting
engineers Mouchel and subsequently Atkins before joining academia. He has
been involved in all stages of the promotion of schemes including policy
formulation, modelling and forecasting, operational analysis and economic
appraisal. He has experience of heavy rail, airports, light rail, highways
and traffic engineering, and has particular interest in walking and cycling
as modes. His research includes monitoring and evaluating sustainable
transport interventions, and investigating perceptions of risk and effort.
He has worked on schemes from conception to construction and provides
training for practitioners.
