Hi All, 

As ever we’re bringing in some extra support for the British Science Festival, so if you are, or know anyone who may be interested in this position, please apply! Previous Festival Press Assistants have found the experience invaluable and it’s a really great opportunity for someone looking to further themselves in Sci Com. 

JOB TITLE:                               British Science Festival Press Assistant

BASED:                                   Wellcome Wolfson Building, Queens Gate, London, SW7 5HD

TERMS:                                    Full time 35 hours per week. Fixed term contract from July to end of September 2011                   

SALARY:                                 £18,660 pro rata


Overall Purpose of the job

Each year, the British Science Association holds the British Science Festival, one of the UK’s largest science festivals. It attracts over 350 of the UK’s top scientists and engineers to discuss the latest developments in science with the public. This year, the Festival will take place from 10-15 September 2011 in Bradford hosted by a consortium of organisations including the University of Bradford, Bradford College and Bradford City Council. Each year the Festival generates a great deal of press interest and the British Science Association runs a strong press operation to facilitate this. In the run up to the Festival the Association provides support and guidance for researchers presenting at the Festival and we also assist the journalists in early engagement with the research by providing press papers. On site during the Festival week, the British Science Association holds a number of press conferences and operates a Press Centre. We are looking for a Press Assistant to assist in the run-up to, during and immediately after the Festival. 


Key responsibilities
•	Collating press papers
•	Identifying newsworthy stories
•	Writing press releases
•	Promoting the Festival
•	Implementing the Festival social media strategy
•	Liaising with speakers
•	Coordinating a team of student helpers at the Festival
•	Setting up press conferences
•	Answering media registration and enquiries
•	Media evaluation post-Festival
•	Other tasks as reasonably required by the line manager or section director. 

Person Specification

Essential

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

	Excellent written and verbal communication skills
	Calm and organised manner
	Computer literate
	Experience of using Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer
	Attention to detail
	Good telephone manner

Desirable

•	Previous experience of working with the press would be an advantage
•	Experience of using social networking sites.

Terms and conditions
The Press Assistant will ideally begin work at the start of July, although this is negotiable, and will work until at least the end of September. Some weekend work and extended hours may be required in the run-up to the Festival. You must be available to attend the Festival in Bradford 10-15 September (inclusive).

The position is offered at a salary of £18,660 per annum. The Association offers a number of benefits to employees who complete three months service and probationary period, including a contributory pension scheme and an interest free season ticket or bicycle loan scheme.
All employees are eligible to have death in service insurance from day one of service.
