Dear all,
With usual apologies for cross posting.
Sent on behalf of Paula Martin who'd be very happy to answer any queries.
Best wishes,
Lorraine
We are all facing an energy crisis. Our current rate of fossil fuel usage is not sustainable, and all our futures are dependent on the research and development of alternative energy sources. Many companies in the energy industry are inventing new ways to extract energy from renewable sources. While the rate of development may seem slow, mainstream awareness and government pressures are growing, and it is essential that we inspire the next generation of Earth Scientists to meet this challenge head-on.
We will be hosting the Earth Science Teachers’ Association Annual Course and Conference in Durham 1st – 3rd July 2011. The ESTA 2011 Course and Conference is aimed at all who teach Earth Sciences at all levels from Primary to HE, with a programme which includes:
· Interactive workshops dealing with a wide variety of Earth Science topics using Durham’s state-of-the-art facilities;
· Keynote lectures focusing on the energy crisis, featuring ESTA President Prof. Jon Gluyas discussing Carbon Capture and Storage and Director of the Durham Energy Institute Prof. Richard Davies discussing Energy;
· Field trips visiting the North Pennines AONB (a UNESCO European and Global Geopark) and other global type localities.
We warmly welcome all those interested in science communication to join us at the ESTA 2011 Annual Course and Conference. All sessions will be accessible to those without a background in Earth Sciences. In addition, special workshops for primary teachers will be available on Saturday 2nd July.
What will it really be like?
A hive of activity, in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with everyone is sharing ideas and experiences! This is a fantastic opportunity for high quality CPD, making teaching and learning Earth Sciences enjoyable and inspiring. Our aim is that all delegates leave every session that they attend with a new idea/concept/activity/resource that they can immediately use in their own approaches to teaching and learning. The local organising committee and the people leading workshops include professional teachers and science communicators as well as academic staff, with a wealth of experience of integrating Earth Sciences in cross-curricular and creative curriculum activities in both primary and secondary schools.
