Last night we had the Oxford don and excellent biographer Lyndall Gordon
talking on Emily Dickinson and among other things there was a moment when
the curtain, as it were, dropped: the compere mentioned that her New
England-born mother (who is now quite elderly) wished she was well enough to
come as her grandmother came from Amherst and lived *round the corner from
the Dickinsons*.
