Hi Steve,
In theory there should be little difference as the NHS environment now also has to pay attention to the bottom line whether the bottom line is about productivity/down time or profit/loss.
I think the main difference may be about organisational culture and the priorities and value different business units place on different outcomes from the OH professional and it is essential the OH nurse isn't just aware of these but understands and delivers outcomes that demonstrates their understanding.
In the NHS environment I work within instead of using the language of profit/ loss we can look at value for the taxpayer ie is it reasonable for the taxpayer to pay for this person not to work or to work in a limited capacity?
When recruiting to the NHS, we expect candidates from a corporate background to demonstrate how their corporate experience transfers to the NHS environment and often people really do forget what business we're in (providing safe, effective and efficient patient care), why we need to have health productive staff and what the outcome on our bottom line is if staff are sick or not performing.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Understanding of Corporate OH
Good Morning
I need some help in preparing candidates for an interview in regards to the question....
"what is your understanding of corporate occupational health" - and this is probably in the context of a comparison to NHS / Public Sector
I have some ideas but wondered if there are any OHA's who have worked in both arenas who are able to offer me some guidance.
Please reply to me at [log in to unmask]
Thanks
