Please find below information on a free workshop being arranged at the University of Exeter on 'Inspirational Outreach' on 23rd June, 11am to 4pm. Places can be booked here: https://www.survey.exeter.ac.uk/inspirational_outreach

Inspirational Outreach: A Workshop on Sharing Practice

Thursday 23rd June 2011, 11.00 – 16.00

University of Exeter, College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences
Harrison Building Room 101, North Park Road, Exeter EX4 4QF

Are you involved in Outreach and Widening Participation activities relating to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the South West of England? Would you like to share your expertise and experiences with colleagues from other institutions? If so, you are warmly invited to attend this workshop, where there will be keynote speakers such as Professor Angie Hart, Dr Alison Hooper and Sophie Duncan, who will discuss the benefits of being part of a STEM Outreach and WP Community of Practice.

In light of the loss of Aimhigher and the focus in Access Agreements on effective (and collaborative) Outreach, we aim to develop a sustainable South-West regional Community of Practice for STEM Outreach and WP practitioners. The Inspirational Outreach Workshop provides an important opportunity for practitioners to share practice and coordinate cross-institutional peer review activities. In doing so, we hope STEM Outreach and WP practitioners across the South-West will be able to become more deeply involved in building a network of cross-institutional collaborative partnerships and achieve more effective STEM Outreach and WP activity.

Brief Biographies of Keynote Speakers

Professor Angie Hart is the Academic Director of the award winning Community University Partnership Programme (Cupp) at the University of Brighton. Cupp was founded in 2003 with the aim of tackling disadvantage and promoting sustainable development through partnership working. As part of her role at Cupp, Angie is also the Brighton lead for the South East Coastal Communities Programme, funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, and which promotes collaborative work between universities and members of the local community in order to build their capacity to meet their Health and Wellbeing needs. At the Inspirational Outreach Workshop, Angie will be talking about the importance of being part of a Community of Practice and motivations for doing so.

Dr Alison Hooper is Associate Head of Student Experience in the Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics at the University of the West of England. Alison has been also involved in a number of Outreach activities, including the Mathematics Challenge, The Maths Event Day, The UWE/Schools Liaison Group, and CPD Days for Teachers, and has recently been involved in a National HE STEM Programme which sought to embed good practice from the University of Plymouth with respect to a coherent STEM approach to School Liaison work at UWE. At the Inspirational Outreach Workshop, Alison will be talking about her experience of sharing practice through peer review.

Sophie Duncan is the Deputy Director of the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE). The role of the NCCPE is to help universities and their staff and students connect and share their work with the public. A physicist by training, Sophie started her career at the Science Museum in London where her work included exhibition development and public programmes. Sophie became a programme manager with Science Year, before joining the BBC, where she managed the creation and delivery of national learning campaigns. Highlights included People's War and Breathing Places, a campaign which led to the creation of over 1000 new community wildlife spaces. At the Inspirational Outreach Workshop, Sophie will be talking about measuring the impact of Outreach.
