CALL FOR PAPERS: MeCCSA-PGN Conference - Bournemouth University, UK
Panel title: "Performing and understanding environmental activism"
Panel organisers:
Alessandro Froldi and Pawas Bisht,
Department of Social Sciences, Loughborough University
For this panel we invite papers that examine the practice of environmental activism in different areas of study. The panel seeks to promote an understanding of environmental activism as a field bringing together approaches from across social movements and urban studies, performance studies, cultural and political geography, social anthropology, cultural and media studies and sociology. Different case studies as well as different theoretical and methodological approaches will be discussed. In particular we aim to debate overlapping issues bridging the phenomenological, SST and ANT approaches, visual and sensory methodologies and any other approaches relevant to the understanding of environmental activism and advocacy. In the spirit of producing collaborative and engaged research we encourage work adopting photography and video as tools for understanding forms of engagement with people and places. We also welcome an examination of the entanglement of these technologies with the processes of communication and memory as well as those of contestation, protest and conflict.
--
The two papers already proposed as part of this panel consider case studies from Milan (Italy) and Bhopal (India).
