De-fragmentation of the Information Professions: Open Meeting
Date: 31/05/2011 at 3pm
Venue: British Computer Society
Address: 5 Southampton Street, London, WC2E 7HA
Anyone with an interest in the current state of the information professions is invited to an open meeting at the BCS in Southampton Street, at 3pm on the 31st of May 2011.
The discussions currently running in LinkedIn, the findings from two previous meetings that have been held, and numerous personal discussions, all lead me to believe that there is a real concern abroad that the information professions are at a significant point in their history and development: and that action is needed. The question is: what action? Which prompts another question: to achieve what?
The two previous meetings were prompted by the CILIP LinkedIn Forum thread "The Fragmentation Death of the Information Professions" and brought together representatives of a range of groups and societies associated with the profession. At the first 'Fragmentation...' meeting, held on the 14th of December 2010 at CILIP, we discussed the issues each groups felt was facing the profession and agreed to hold a further meeting with a much enlarged membership to ensure we were a truly representative group.
The second meeting was held at the British Dental Association commencing at 3pm and closing at 5pm, on the 22nd of February 2011. This meeting developed some of the areas of work we identified at the first meeting, those being:
Coherence and identity - what is the information profession?
Influence - of whom, why, about what?
We are now inviting anyone with an interest in the future of the information profession to attend an open meeting in May to discuss these issues further. The format of the meeting will use breakout groups to keep the pace going. The agenda, with rough timings, looks like this:
A presentation giving a summary of our activity to date, for around fifteen minutes
A presentation setting out the issues that we have been raised in the thread and the meetings, probably for half an hour
Breakout groups discussing the two topics as numbers dictate, again, probably lasting about half an hour
A report back and summary session, half an hour
A closing discussion including next steps in existing work and any new projects arising from this meeting, taking us to 5pm.
Coffee and tea will be available in the room.
I look forward to seeing you all, Mark
