We, for one, had complaints from students about the
noise when we opened a new study area with vinyl
flooring.
Once that flooring disappeared ( only partially, i.e.
where the foot traffic was heaviest ) in favor of carpet,
so did those complaints, as far as I'm aware. ( Though
one continued to hear some complaints about noise
from certain other sources -- e.g. from a photocopier
in the vicinity, and even from keyboards. )

Subject: Flooring in silent study areas
Has anyone tried using hard flooring, such as vinyl, in student study or silent
areas? Our estates department are very keen on laying vinyl in a silent study
area which we are refurbishing. We believe this surface will make the area noisy
but we have no evidence for this and so are seeking some advice before we meet
them again.
Many thanks in anticipation
