Dear Colleagues,
There were 5 replies to the enquiry posted on 16th May: four from HEIs with 600-2500 students and one with more than 20,000 students:
EMPLOYING STUDENTS:
Q1. WHAT DO YOU EMPLOY STUDENTS TO DO, E.G. SHELVING, WORKING ON IT HELPDESK, WORKING ON THE ISSUE COUNTER, ETC. All use students for shelving, and one also for sorting gifts. Students in two libraries use the LMS for circulation under strict data confidentiality conditions. Students in another library assist borrowers using their self-issue system and provide general assistance. This library may give student workers access to their new LMS next year, when it provides a lower level of access.
Q2. IF YOU DO NOT EMPLOY THEM ON THE ISSUE COUNTER, WHY IS THAT? DATA PROTECTION ISSUES, OR ANOTHER REASON? No specific reason was given.
Q3. WHAT RATIO OF STUDENTS PER FTE POST DO YOU USE? One library stated 5 students per FTE; another 10:1.
EXTENDED OPENING HOURS:
Q4. WHO STAFFS YOUR EXTENDED OPENING HOURS: LIBRARY STAFF, SECURITY OFFICERS, STUDENTS, OTHERS? One
library uses only library staff, three use library staff with student assistants. The fifth, which has a self-issue system, staffs the extended hours with one student who has access to security, a panic button and emergency telephone.
Q5. WHAT RESOURCES IN YOUR LIBRARY DO YOU PERCEIVE STUDENTS USE DURING YOUR EXTENDED OPENING HOURS? In most, students use all resources. One listed mainly books and computers. Two performing arts libraries said that students use AV resources and computers for partially social use in one and largely their own laptops in the other.
Many thanks.
