Dear Italianists,

The bilingual academic journal Quaderni del '900 is currently accepting submissions for its themed issue (XI, 2011) on "Coming-of-Age: Perspectives and Narratives in Italian Literature and Cinema from World War II to Present."  Deadline for submission of abstract is June 15, 2011, and final submission of articles is September 1, 2011.  Issue XI will be published in January 2012.

“Coming-of-Age:  Perspectives and Narratives in Italian Literature and Cinema from World War II to Present”

The bi-lingual journal Quaderni del ‘900 invites proposals for contributions to a themed issue exploring processes of maturation, personal and artistic growth, or cultural and social development in Italian literature and cinema from World War II to present day. In addition to essays that focus on the role of the child/adolescent as both object of representation and narrative subject, we welcome contributions that consider this period metaphorically as a process of maturation of collective identity, namely, the coming-of-age of a modern nation. We also wish to include studies on perspectives and narratives that resist initiation-into-adulthood and challenge traditional notions of what it means to take one’s place in society, adopting a nostalgic or ironic take. We encourage the use of an interdisciplinary approach and the combination of different theoretical propositions and comparative analysis to explore the independent cultural weight of this theme in a changing literary a!
 nd cinematic landscape. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
-  Bildungsroman and/or its exhausted pedagogical function in post-war era
- Metaphorical constructions of the sense of novelty, rebirth, progress, and maturity surrounding the concept of nation, particularly (but not exclusively) through the figure of the child/adolescent
-  Child’s perspective as unconditioned access to a more objective reality
-  Growth of the political subject in social landscapes
-  Unreliable narrators, innocent perspectives
-  Representation of the child/adolescent as meta-narrative device
-  Sexualization of the child/adolescent on-screen or in print
-  Coming to awareness of sexual and gender relationships
-  Popular and mass culture as impediments or instigators of personal growth
-  “Liquid” family relationships in postmodern society

-  Adolescence and construction of identity in a global era

Proposals (up to 300 words in length) should be submitted by June 15th, 2011 to the Assistant Editors (see below) at [log in to unmask] Contributors will be notified of acceptance of their proposal by June 30th, 2011. Accepted contributions should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including footnotes and works cited), and must be submitted by September 1, 2011. Please send proposals and submissions as e-mail attachments in one of the following formats: Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Microsoft Word (.doc / .docx).  Quaderni del '900 welcomes proposals and submissions in English and Italian. Guidelines regarding formatting of contributions will be provided along with notifications of acceptance.

“Diventare adulti: prospettive e narrazioni nella letteratura e nel cinema in Italia dalla seconda guerra mondiale ad oggi”

 

La rivista bilingue Quaderni del ‘900 invita a sottoporre proposte di articoli per il prossimo numero monografico che avrà come tema l’indagine dei diversi percorsi di maturazione, crescita personale e artistica, e sviluppo culturale e sociale all’interno della letteratura e del cinema italiano dalla seconda guerra mondiale ad oggi. Oltre a saggi centrati sul ruolo del bambino/adolescente inteso sia come oggetto della rappresentazione che soggetto della narrazione, si sollecita l’invio di contributi che considerino metaforicamente il  periodo in esame come processo di maturazione collettivo e identitario, ovvero il « diventare adulti» di una nazione moderna. Ci si propone infine di includere studi su prospettive e rappresentazioni narrative che contrastino il consueto percorso di iniziazione all'età adulta e, adottando uno sguardo nostalgico o ironico, contestino la comune percezione dell’idea di maturazione intesa come assunzione di un ruolo all'interno della società. Si in!
 coraggiano l'utilizzo di un approccio interdisciplinare e il ricorso a diverse proposte teoriche e analisi comparate per esaminare il particolare peso culturale di questo tema all'interno di un panorama letterario e cinematografico in continuo cambiamento. Tra i possibili argomenti si segnalano:
-      Il Bildungsroman e/o l'esaurimento della sua funzione pedagogica nel dopoguerra
-      Elaborazioni metaforiche del senso di novità, rinascita, progresso e maturazione associati all’idea di nazione, specialmente (ma non esclusivamente) attraverso la figura del bambino/adolescente
-      La prospettiva del bambino intesa come accesso incondizionato alla realtà oggettiva
-      La crescita del soggetto politico nel panorama sociale
-      Narratori inaffidabili, prospettive innocenti
-      La rappresentazione del bambino/adolescente come strumento meta-narrativo
-      La caratterizzazione sessuale del bambino/adolescente sulla pagina e sullo schermo
-      Il raggiungimento della consapevolezza nelle relazioni sessuali e di genere
-      La cultura popolare e di massa come ostacolo o stimolo alla crescita personale
-      I rapporti familiari ‘liquidi’ nella società postmoderna.

-      L’adolescenza e la costruzione di un’identità nell’era globale

Le proposte (massimo 300 parole) devono essere inviate alla Redazione entro il 15 giugno 2011 al seguente indirizzo: [log in to unmask] Gli autori delle proposte selezionate verranno contattati entro il 30 giugno 2011. I saggi destinati alla pubblicazione dovranno essere compresi tra le 6000 e le 8000 parole (incluse note e bibliografia), e dovranno essere consegnati entro il 1° settembre 2011.
