SCAPE Principal Software Engineer, The British Library
Salary: St Pancras £37,561 per annum / Boston Spa £34,391 per annum
Fixed term 3.5 years
This new post will provide the opportunity to play a leading role in developing innovative digital technologies as part of a cutting edge European research and development project. SCAPE (http://www.scape-project.eu/) brings together Libraries, Archives, Research Institutions and Commercial partners in a 3.5 year project to develop scalable solutions to the digital preservation challenges of the 21st century.
As the SCAPE Principal Software Engineer you will develop automated approaches for analysing, assessing and verifying the integrity of digital data such as documents, sound, video, scientific datasets and archived websites. You will validate the accuracy and effectiveness of preservation actions by applying techniques such as digital fingerprinting, image processing and optical character recognition. Your contributions will ensure that memory organisations, such as the British Library, are able to preserve digital cultural and scientific heritage for posterity. This role is an exciting opportunity to work alongside world leading digital preservation experts and develop experience in this growing field. You will draw on the technologies developed by the Planets Project and join the community of developers championed by the Open Planets Foundation (http://openplanetsfoundation.org/).
You will have excellent software development skills and the ability to create, integrate and test preservation tools using Java and scripting languages such as Python and Bash. Strong team working skills and an enthusiasm to work in a collaborative project environment will be essential.
