Dear OpenURL listserv subscribers,
The OpenURL Maintenance Agency is pleased to announce the "public review
and trial period phase" of the Canonical Citation submittal. Discussion
on this listserv will serve as one form of the public review and
messages will be archived by the maintenance agency. In addition,
comments may now be made on the NISO website, where these documents are
made available publicly.
The submittal includes a community profile:
http://www.niso.org/apps/group_public/document.php?document_id=6178&wg_a
bbrev=z3988review
and a metadata format:
http://www.niso.org/apps/group_public/document.php?document_id=5397&wg_a
bbrev=z3988review
The links above resolve to public NISO document pages. The pages
include descriptive information, a link to the OpenURL registry entry
and the ability to add public comments. You are encouraged to post your
comments on the NISO document pages. The registry entries are located
in the NISO OpenURL registry at http://openurl.info/registry. The
Canonical Citation entries are marked "Trial" in the registry.
A complete description of the Canonical Citation by the submitter David
Ruddy is available here:
http://www.niso.org/apps/group_public/document.php?document_id=6367&wg_a
bbrev=z3988review
The process for submittals is outlined at:
http://alcme.oclc.org/openurl/docs/pdf/SubmittalProcess.pdf
We have passed Gate 2 in the submittal process for "The Canonical
Citation" where the Z39.88 Review panel and community members associated
with
the submittal have completed their review and outstanding issues have
been addressed. We are now entering Gate 3 that entails a public
review and Trial Use period. This phase is planned to last for three
months, completing on August 5th, 2011.
Here are some words from the submitter, David Ruddy of Cornell
University regarding the Canonical Citation and the public trial:
________________________________
The proposed OpenURL KEV Metadata Format allows for the description of a
"canonical citation," which is a citation to a work, or a passage within
a work, that is independent of any specific published edition or
translation of the work. While the immediate application of this format
is for citations to Classical literature (e.g., "Homer, Iliad,
1:125-130"), it could be applied in other scholarly domains where
canonical citations are used.
Canonical citation OpenURLs will support linking capability between a
cited passage and various potential services related to that passage,
such as multiple electronically accessible versions and/or translations.
A related component of this linking capability will be the specialized
knowledge required both for the correct identification of works
described in canonical citation OpenURLs, as well as for the
construction of links to possible targets. Such knowledge will be domain
specific. For Classics, a Classical Works Knowledge Base (CWKB) is being
assembled at Cornell. The CWKB will act as a link resolver (or a link
resolver mediator, depending on how it is used), accepting incoming
canonical citation OpenURLs and either directing users to citations
available from full-text providers, or sending an enhanced OpenURL on to
a user's local link resolver. For more details about the CWKB, please
see http://cwkb.org.
For this public trial of the Canonical Citation Metadata Format, the
project team welcomes comments about the potential usefulness or
limitations of the proposed format, and/or suggestions for improvement.
