Call for Papers
Research in the Large 2: App Stores, Wide Distribution Channels & Big
Data in Research
Workshop at UbiComp 2011, Sept 18, Beijing, China
http://large.mobilelifecentre.org
June 12, 2011 – Submission deadline
The distribution of mobile applications has been greatly simplified by
mobile app stores and markets. Both lone developers and large research
and development teams can now relatively easily reach wide audiences.
In addition, existing ubiquitous services are providing researchers
with data sets or access to content via APIs, greatly expanding the
ability to study the use of these systems on a global scale. This
provides a huge opportunity for both iterative development and
gathering large amounts of research data.
Evaluation and research methods have to be adapted to this new
context, and we need to deal with ever-growing, real-time datasets and
infrastructures previously unencountered by most UbiComp researchers.
An overview of successful strategies and ways to overcome the
challenges inherent to wide deployment and the resulting large
datasets in a research context – ranging from platform characteristics
to gathering reliable research data – however is not yet available.
The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers and
developers from academia and industry to exchange experiences,
insights and strategies for wide distribution of applications and the
resulting large data streams these deployments produce. We aim at
building an understanding of the opportunity of the different channels
and the issues and obstacles involved in a research context.
We’re interested in contributions from developers and researchers in
both industry and academia. Themes include:
- Strategies for wide distribution of research applications
- Methods & experiences with research through app stores and other
distribution platforms
- The impact of differences between distribution platforms
- Analysis of the various sorts of data, logs and feedback resulting
from publicly released applications
- Dealing with big data: infrastructure, tools and experiences in
dealing with large-scale datasets, potentially those growing by
millions of data points every day
- Effects of mobile ecosystem features (distribution, payment, service
providers etc) on research and evaluation results
- New developments of distribution channels, tools and infrastructures
- Design patterns for increasing data quality
- Ethical & validity concerns in research on such a large scale
Workshop contributions are expected in the form of (up to) 4-page
papers in the UbiComp 2011 “Templates for Workshops, Posters, Demos,
Videos, and DC” format.
Contributions can address previous experiences and for example case
studies, or state a position on the opportunities and challenges
ahead. Submissions will be reviewed by a program committee consisting
of both industry and academia partners. All accepted workshop papers
will be included in the ACM digital library and the supplemental
UbiComp 2011 proceedings. Submission deadline: June 12, 2011.
Send submissions to henriette at mobilelifecentre.org.

June 29th, 2011 – Notification of acceptance of workshop papers
