Or maybe it's just complaining about clutter that has that effect...
As Paul Duller has said, this thread follows a similar one which occupied
the Records Management list on Thursday and Friday. I'd like to repeat on
this list what I said there for the those of you who do not subscribe to
that list (and as recordkeeping professionals, perhaps you should but that's
an argument for a different day)because it appears to be equally
appropriate:
'Setting up a rule to divert the RAIN postings (or indeed any other messages
not related to day to day business, such as this list) into their own
specific folder is the simplest answer. You can then delete them all
without looking at them or read them at your leisure. Five minutes a day
while eating your lunchtime sandwich should be enough. Rain's proved a
great resource over the years and, like others, I'm very grateful to PeterK
for the effort that he's prepared to put into it for so little immediate
reward or, apparently, appreciation.
One thing that has struck me in this exchange...is the ungracious tone of
some of the comments. Even if it's not for you, there are ways of saying so
which would give less gratuitous offence to an experienced, helpful and
committed professional colleague.'
Clearly some of you are relative newcomers to the profession. You seem to be
unaware of the history of RAIN (Records and Archives in the News) a digest
of records related press reports which Peter Kurilecz, a highly experienced
Certified Records Manager and Certified Archivist in the US, put together
over a number of years. It was similar to, but more extensive than, the
digest compiled by Michelle Losse referred to earlier. Responding to similar
groans and moans in the past, he has set up a number of alternative delivery
mechanisms allowing people to opt in to receiving the material. However, as
he also has a demanding day job and a life, he can't always maintain those
mechanisms and so sends items that he thinks might be interesting to a UK
audience to the lists as individual emails. They're not spam - he's not
trying to sell you anything nor to influence you in any way. He is trying to
keep you abreast of what is going on in the recordkeeping world but perhaps
you feel you know enough already. After 45 years in the profession, I still
find many of the stories interesting and thought-provoking.
