For those of you in the UK in June:
We are pleased to invite you to Sheffield for the next Archaeobotany workgroup to be held in the Department of Archaeology on Saturday 11th June. We plan to start with tea and coffee from 10:30 for an 11am start and finish the day around 3pm. As usual, could everyone please bring a plate to share for lunch.
Proposed discussion:
Archaeobotany and the internet. With a new archaeobotany photo sharing website set up in the US and an online archaeobotany tutorial produced in Sheffield it might be timely to discuss what resources are currently available online for identification, and for finding and sharing information. What would be useful to have online and how could new resources be developed? It might be useful to share what resources people find helpful in their archaeobotanical work.
There will also be a display of the interesting and well preserved plant remains from Catal Hoyuk.
As usual, bring along your unknown or unusual plant remains to show and chat about and hopefully identify in the afternoon. We have an extensive seed reference collection and a charred root and tuber collection that can be consulted and plenty of high and low power microscopes.
If there is a particular topic you would like to discuss or present on the day, or if there is certain reference material that you would like others to bring to the workshop then please let us know.
The Department of Archaeology is on West St (c. 15 mins walk from the railway station) and can be reached by tram from the station - the department is opposite the West Street tram stop (in front of Nandos and Tesco Express). Directions and maps can be found at: http://www.shef.ac.uk/visitors/mapsandtravel - the Department of Archaeology is 180 (extreme right) on the campus map. If you require parking, there is a multistorey carpark more or less behind the Department with access on Portobello St. (£1 per hour) – approach from the Rockingham St. end (ignore the P signs on the campus map as most of these require a parking permit).
To help with our planning, please contact [log in to unmask] (do not reply to list) to confirm your attendance and to indicate (broadly) the type of food that you plan to bring!
