Edges of Europe: Frontiers in Context
Sponsored by the Royal Historical Society, the Symposium will bring together
medievalists and modernists, European and colonial historians from Lancaster
and beyond to address the interrelations of geographical space, cultural
identities, and political power. The focus of the two-day discussion will be
the internal and external frontiers of Europe (geographic, cultural, and
political) at different times in the continent's history, including its
history of colonial expansion.
The plenary lecture on "The Art of Not Being Governed" will be given by
James C. Scott (Yale University) and the concluding roundtable discussion
chaired by Colin Jones, President of the RHS. Other external contributors
include Chris Andersen (University of Alberta) on 'Underdeveloped
identities: Canada's colonialism and the misrecognition of Aboriginal
"census groups,"' Nora Berend (University of Cambridge) on "From Gate to
Fortress: Hungary and the Iberian peninsula on the edge of medieval Europe,"
and Craig Campbell (University of Texas-Austin) on "Communism and
cross-cultural encounters in Central Siberia." Papers will also be given by
members of the Lancaster History Department including Sarah Barber,
Alexander Grant, Andrew Jotischky, Alex Metcalfe, Derek Sayer, John
Strachan, Deborah Sutton, Naomi Tadmor, and Yoke-Sum Wong.
