1.1 Stand for election as a Trustee of ALT, or as Vice-Chair
It is getting to that time of year again. We have published the
ominously named "AGM Calling Notice and Trustee and Vice-Chair

1.2 The new ALT web site
The new ALT web site went live at http://www.alt.ac.uk/ on 20 April. We
welcome feedback via http://www.alt.ac.uk/contact, but please check

problem. Meanwhile, we thank a number of people for contributing ideas
for the site, and observations about its operation at

1.3 2011 Learning Technologist of the Year Award – deadline 26 May
The entry form for and full details of the award is at

The award is open to individuals and teams based anywhere in the UK, and
to individual ordinary and certified members anywhere in the world.

means that an excellent opportunity to support ALT and to celebrate good

1.4 Call for nominations for Honorary Life Membership of ALT

1.5 New CMALT Development Group Members appointed
Dragos Ciobanu, Shirley Evans, Devampika Getkahn, Sarah Horrigan and
Charles Juwah have been appointed as new members of the CMALT

1.6 Response to the review of the English National Curriculum

of the Technology Enhanced Learning Programme (TEL).
1.7 Staffing changes

full time.

2. ALT events
2.1 ALT-C 2011 - "Thriving in colder and more challenging climate", our
18th international annual conference. will be held 6-8 September at the
University of Leeds.
Bookings will open later this month for ALT-C 2011. Keynote speakers
will include Miguel Brechner, Head of Uruguay's Plan Ceibal, under which
all children and teachers in public schools in Uruguay have received
their own laptop and connectivity to the Internet; Karen Cator, Director
of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of
Education, and previously head of Apple's leadership and advocacy
efforts in education, where she focused on the intersection of education
policy and research, emerging technologies, and the reality faced by
teachers, students and managers; and John Naughton, Professor of the
Public Understanding of Technology at the Open University, and the
Observer's technology columnist. Conference co-chairs: John Cook,
Professor of Technology Enhanced Learning at the Learning Technology
Research Institute, London Metropolitan University and Sugata Mitra,

2.2 Lecture capture - doing it well and at scale - a one day ALT event
on 16 June in London at Queen Mary’s University
Many organisations are turning to recording lectures and other kinds of
teaching session, and publishing these internally or externally so that
students and others can access the recordings at their leisure. “Lecture
Capture” is the awkward name for the family of technologies that support
the making of such recordings. The aim of this ALT event is to help
participants get to grips with the human, organisational, pedagogic,
quality and technical challenges of doing lecture capture well and at
scale. The programme is now available on the ALT web site at

2.3 Getting started with mobile learning

2.4 Making the most of informal learning
As part of the series of free lunchtime webinars we are running jointly

3.1 JISC on Air: Meeting student needs to improve retention
In the third of a new series of online ‘radio’ shows – JISC on Air – we
explore how digital technologies are helping universities and colleges
to better meet students’ requirements and improve retention. Kim
Catcheside speaks with Richard Francis, at Oxford Brookes University and
Ellen Lessner, at Abingdon and Witney College about how their
institutions are better preparing their learners for their experience of
learning with technology. Kim also speaks with Helen Beetham, author of
the recent Review of Digital Literacies, Stephen Jackson, QAA and Alex

3.2 A new UK Government ICT Strategy
The Cabinet Office has published a new Government ICT Strategy.
Mercifully brief (25 pages), it is in four main parts, with, in
addition, an Annex containing a ""new governance structure:
Part 1 – Reducing waste and project failure, and stimulating economic growth
Part 2 – Creating a common ICT infrastructure
Part 3 – Using ICT to enable and deliver change
Part 4 – Strengthening governance

3.3 A new Media & Learning Community
A new international community of practice has just been launched for
practitioners interested in the use of media in education. Besides being
able to join discussions, community members can promote their own
initiatives and events, and share educational resources focused on media
and learning. As the community is multilingual, discussions and
resources are available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and

3.4 Desire2Learn Acquires Captual Technologies Inc. to Offer
Presentation Capture and Webcasting Solutions
Desire2Learn, an ALT sponsoring member has acquired Captual Technologies
Inc., makers of ePresence. The acquisition enables Desire2Learn to
provide a presentation capture and webcasting solution for rich media
presentations live or on-demand with options for cloud-based hosting.
The ePresence product becomes Desire2Learn’s sixth standalone product
platform, and is known as “Desire2Learn Capture”. Presentations can
include video, slides, screen and peripheral sharing, incorporate
digital whiteboards and document cameras, and viewer chats and comments.

3.6 WISE Awards - closing date 31 May 2011
The WISE Awards are designed to identify, showcase and promote
innovative educational projects from around the world. Every year, since
2009, six winners are selected by a prestigious Jury -

education. In addition to this recognition given by eminent experts from
the education world, they receive $20,000 and are given access to
international exposure. The 2011 edition of the WISE Awards will

4.1 Media & Learning Conference 2011 Dates Announced
The Media & Learning Conference 2011, aimed at policy makers and
practitioners interested in how media can be used to enhance learning
opportunities for all citizens, will take place on 24-25 November 2011
in Brussels, Belgium. It is being organised in collaboration with the
Flemish Ministry of Education and Training and the European Commission
Directorate-General for Education and Culture and will take place in the
Flemish Ministry of Education and Training Headquarters in Brussels. The

4.2.1 Online facilitators’ workshop – June 15 or September 22 2011
This event is for online facilitators and those who wish to become
online facilitators. The workshops take place for one day in March, June
and one in September at the University of Bedfordshire, Luton Campus
10.00am to 3.30pm. The day will begin with an introduction to the key
concepts associated with online collaborative software and go on to
cover areas such as different types of community, how to get the most
from the online tools, understanding the needs of your participants as

4.4 6th International Blended Learning Conference
Booking is now open for the Sixth International Blended Learning
Conference: “From Innovation to Institutional Enhancement - operating in

4.5 2011 International CAA Conference, 5th & 6th July 2011

The International CAA Conference is a two day research-led conference,
now hosted by the University of Southampton and organised by Electronics
and Computer Science and the Institute of Educational Technology at the
Open University. The Conference aims to advance the understanding and
application of information technology to the assessment process
(e-assessment) through rigorous peer-reviewed research. As in previous
years the conference will be accessible to those with an interest in
implementation and pedagogy, the more technically minded, and those
involved at a strategic level such as managers and support services.
4.6 Teaching in the age of plenty: what does it mean for me and my students?
Free workshop will explore the challenges of teaching in digital age
where access to information is plentiful through ‘always on’ 21C
devices. What changes in terms of our teaching? What should we be doing
differently? How do we manage this new learning landscape? This
practical taster session is for teachers, lecturers, learning
technologists, trainers and those who support learning. It will provide
some ideas for ways of understanding and managing the job of teaching in
21C classroom. We will be running an online course via Facebook during

4.7 ATN Assessment Conference 20/21 Oct 2011: 'Meeting the challenges'
The ATNA2011 Conference Committee warmly invites you to participate in

4.8 Work-based Learning Maturity Toolkit – Dissemination workshop 28
June, University of Westminster, London
A group of universities and colleges (across England, Scotland and
Wales) has developed a work-based learning maturity toolkit (including a
methodology for using it) with funding from JISC’s Lifelong
Learning-Workforce Development programme and are in the process of
piloting it (see http://ww.tinyurl.com/wbl-toolkit). On the 28 June
(10am – 4pm), they will be holding a dissemination workshop at the
University of Westminster, London. The objectives of the workshop will
be to describe the toolkit, the methodology for using it & the benefits
from engaging with it and to share experiences of its application. You

4.9 ECE 6th International Conference - Creativity and Engagement in
Higher Education

4.12 Campus Pack UK User Group - first meeting
The first meeting of the new Campus Pack UK User Group will take place
on Friday 17th June, at Birkbeck College in London. This is a free
event, for educators using the Campus Pack tools to get together and

Objects, including the launch of their new mobile interface. You can

4.13 MaharaUK11 Conference Registration and Call for Papers
Mahara Conference UK 2011 will take place on 21 and 22 June 2011 at

4.14 Pebblegogy: one-day conference and book launch
A conference, about a book, about ideas and activities to inspire and
engage learners. On the 21 June, the University of Wolverhampton will be
hosting the launch of Pebblegogy. This is a book of two halves. The
first provides the most detailed explanation yet of what PebblePad is,
what it stands for and why it works the way it does. The latter half
presents a rich collection of learning designs resulting from the
contributions and collaborations of more than 40 practitioners from the

4.15 SEDA Summer School 2011: Supporting Educational Change

4.16 London Second Wednesday Event: E-learning Innovation: A future for
learning?
E-Learning Innovation: A vision for future learning? In the global
downturn the need to innovate is becoming more central to all the public
services. This event will explore future visions for e-learning in the
light of university education and business in Europe. The Second
Wednesday e-learning innovation: vision for future learning event will
bring together participants to consider what the future of learning will
be in the light of social networks and gamification (sic!) of everyday
life. Will learning integrate new technologies as part of blended
learning in the tradition of e-learning - or will it transform into a
different approach to learning altogether? The event will be held in
London in Liverpool Street at Coventry University's new campus and will
be held between 12-6pm with lunch and drinks included. The event will
also be live streamed in Second Life and lectures will be preserved in
the Serious Games Institute's video archive. Participation from

5.1 Call for AJET Special Issue articles: Virtual worlds in tertiary
education
Call for articles: Submissions are invited for a forthcoming special
issue of AJET (Australasian Journal of Educational Technology) to be

5.2 Researching Learning in Immersive Virtual Environments 2011
(ReLIVE11) - Call for Abstracts
Creative Solutions for New Futures, 21- 22 September 2011, The Open
University, UK. Innovation in teaching and learning through virtual
worlds was a major theme of ReLIVE08. In the three years since this
event, our understanding of what it means to work, play and learn in
these spaces has increased significantly. ReLIVE11 will revisit some of
the themes of ReLIVE08, but from the fresh perspective of using all that
we have learned in between to explore how virtual worlds can help us and

5.3 Second Call for Papers: mLearn 2011
The 10th World Conference on Mobile and Contextual Learning will be held
in Beijing, 18 - 21 October 2011 (http://mlearn.bnu.edu.cn). The new
full paper submission date is 5 May 2011, and the mLearn 2011 paper
submission system is now open. Before uploading your paper, you should

5.4 Call for proposals for special issues: Learning, Media and Technology
We are currently inviting proposals from potential guest editors willing
to produce a special issue of the Taylor & Francis journal Learning,
Media and Technology. The issue will be published in 2013 (volume 38) on
a theme of the guest editors’ choice. The team should consist of two
(or more) guest editors. Applicants should have a clear vision of the
purpose and content of their special issue – outlining the theme and
rationale of their proposed special issue in no more than 500 words. The
deadline for proposals is July 4th 2011 (the successful guest editorial
team will be notified by August 1st 2011). Further details, and guidance

The Media & Learning Conference 2011 is aimed at practitioners and
policy makers who want to contribute to the development of digital and
media skills in education and to finding new and effective ways to embed

6. Funding calls
6.1 JISC Grant Funding 03/11: Digging into Data Challenge - £1m
available for projects up to £150k over 6 to 24 months from January 2012
JISC, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic
and Social Research Council (ESRC), along with five international
funding bodies, invite institutions to submit proposals for the Digging
into Data Challenge. The deadline for receipt of final proposals in
response to this call will be 23:59 (Greenwich Mean Time) on 16 June
2011. There is a UK specific addendum which should be read in
conjunction with the main request for proposals available on the Digging

6.2 Learning and Teaching Enhancement Fund for Wales 2011
The Higher Education Academy (HEA) is pleased to invite applications to
the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Fund for Wales for up to £2,500
per proposal. This is an open call and proposals are welcome any time up
to Friday 13 May 2011. Projects need to be commenced no later than 31
May 2011 and need to be completed no later than 31 July 2011.

6.3 JISC "Developing Digital Literacies" call
JISC invites institutions to submit funding proposals for projects to
support the development and implementation of institutional approaches
to digital literacies across the entire workforce and including
students. Total funding of up to £1,000,000 is available for 10 to 12
two year projects funded at up to £100,000 each , and starting work in
mid July 2011. The deadline for proposals is 12 noon UK time on
Wednesday, 8 June 2011. Note that one of the five evaluation criteria
for bids is "Engagement with the community" against which the call
document includes "Does the bid include a partnership with a relevant
sector body or professional association to support the communication,
dissemination and benefits realisation activities?" as a question that
evaluators will be considering. Proposals may be submitted by HE
institutions funded via HEFCE, SFC, HEFCW and DEL Northern Ireland, and
by FE institutions funded via SFC, DCELLS Wales and DEL Northern
Ireland. FE institutions in England that teach HE to more than 400 FTEs
are also eligible to bid provided proposals demonstrate how the work
supports the HE in FE agenda. The call and an associated briefing paper

6.4 Adult and Community Learning Fund 2011
The Adult and Community Learning Fund is a new £2.25m fund from the
Skills Funding Agency, administered by NIACE. The Adult and Community
Learning Fund will ""help make the Big Society a reality"" and will
""contribute to the Government's aspirations for Informal Adult and
