Dear all(stat),
(Apologies for any cross-posting.)
The next Annual Meeting for Teachers of Medical Statistics ("Burwalls")
will be held at the University of Glasgow, Wednesday 29th June to Friday
1st July 2011.
Burwalls is a small meeting (capped to 30 attendees) with the aim of
encouraging and equipping those responsible for teaching statistics (and
also evidence based medicine) to medical students and health care
professionals, and is the only one of its kind in the UK. The meeting is
also an opportunity to chat with others working in the same area, find
out what other medical schools are doing and pick up a few tips. It was
held for many years at Burwalls in Bristol but is now peripatetic.
The conference will take place at the University of Glasgow's main
Gilmorehill campus in the heart of the city's leafy West End within
walking distance of good pubs, restaurants, museums, art galleries and
parks.
From the University of Glasgow we can already confirm Professor Stephen
Senn (author of Dicing With Death, among many other things) as our
after-dinner speaker on the Thursday evening, as well as Professors
Adrian Bowman and John McColl giving talks.
The meeting is being co-organised by Dr Jim Lewsey
([log in to unmask]) and Dr John McClure
([log in to unmask]). Please email us if you are interested in
giving a talk. The meeting is informal and talks can relate to any
element of teaching statistics or EBM. Topics of interest that were put
on a "wish list" at the end of last year's meeting included tips on
improving consultancy skills, a statistics software review session (in
relation to teaching non-statisticians who undertake a quantitative
project), and an overview of the statistics topics being taught in the
different UK medical schools.
Costs are similar to last year: £170 for non-residential delegates
(includes all meals) and £250 for residential delegates (includes all
meals). The accommodation is a 20 minutes walk through the Botanical
Gardens to the University
(http://www.gla.ac.uk/undergraduate/accommodation/self-cateredaccommodation/queenmargaretresidences/).
Registration forms are available from Anne Marie McLean
([log in to unmask]).
Thanks,
John
