Dear all

I'd be grateful if you could please bring the following PhD studentship opportunities to the attention of anyone you think would be suitable. I have documents providing further details of each project that I would be happy to email out on request, and I would recommend applicants do request these before applying if possible.

Many thanks, Andrew

MRC Clinical Trials Unit, London

4 PhD Studentships in Medical Statistics & Epidemiology

Stipend £15,740 per annum

The award covers fees and a tax-free maintenance stipend over three years. In the first year the stipend is £15,740.

Four MRC-funded PhD studentships are available at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit commencing September 2011. Each student will study one of the following four projects in medical statistics / epidemiology:

1. Addressing major outstanding questions in the treatment of HIV-infected adults and children in resource-limited settings through the analysis of the combined datasets of the DART (2003-2008, ~15000 person-years) and ARROW (2007-2011, ~5000 child-years) trials
2. Characterising the HIV epidemic, and estimating HIV incidence, in eastern and central Europe as part of a new EU-funded Europe-wide EuroCoord Network of Excellence
3. Avoiding bias and learning more from the analysis of longitudinal data: reviewing and adapting methods to analyse repeated measurements data (such as CD4 count in HIV and PSA in prostate cancer studies) as collected in randomized trials and cohort studies
4. Reviewing and adapting group sequential and other novel designs for Phase II and III trials for the screening of novel combination regimens for the treatment of tuberculosis

These projects will all allow the student to develop skills in the analysis of quantitative data in medical research. The projects differ in terms of which further skills will be developed as some will focus more on statistical methods and some more on epidemiological research methods. Further details of each project available on request from Dr Andrew Copas - e-mail [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

You will join the group of PhD students within the MRC London Hub for Trials Methodology research based at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit. You will register for full-time MPhil/PhD study at the Research Department of Infection and Population Health, University College London (UCL), and will benefit from the range of training opportunities provided through UCL.

You will have an MSc in statistics, medical statistics, or epidemiology, or equivalent experience together with a BSc in a quantitative discipline. Following MRC restrictions, full studentships are available only to UK applicants. Other EU applicants may be eligible for a "fees-only" award.

For an informal discussion about any of the proposed projects or studying at the unit please contact Dr Andrew Copas - e-mail [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Applications for theses studentships should be made online at http://jobs.mrc.ac.uk<http://jobs.mrc.ac.uk/>, by first entering IRC21849 into the keywords field and searching for the vacancy. The webpage advert contains further details such as selection criteria. When applying online please complete the cover letter section clearly stating, with examples, why you would like to be considered for this studentship and how you meet each of the selection criteria. Please also supply a CV and the details of two academic referees. Candidates may express a preference for one or more of the four projects in the cover letter section of the application, and if so doing should briefly explain their preference. For shortlisted candidates there will be an opportunity to discuss the nature of each project at interview.

If you do not have internet access or experience technical difficulties, or if you would like to receive this advert in large print, Braille, audio or electronic format/hard copy, please contact the recruitment team at the Shared Service Centre on the telephone number 01793 867003 quoting the reference IRC21849, or email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
