Retirement Deferred: Aging, Gender and Representation
A one day symposium
to be held at
Department of Screen Media and Journalism
UWE St Matthias Campus, Fishponds Bristol
28 June 2011
Confirmed keynote speakers:
Brian Worsfold, University of Lleida
Sadie Wearing, LSE
The current social and political climate is increasingly dominated by concerns about the implications of an aging population, from political debates about pensions to a growing awareness of the gendered implications of age for women and men working in the media. Meanwhile, a proliferation of screen and pop stars are held up as role models of ‘youthful aging’.
This interdisciplinary symposium will explore how the pressures to defer retirement, both in the workplace and the social sphere, collide with the consumer myth of ‘leisured later life’.
How is retirement represented?
Is the emphasis on remaining ‘forever young’ becoming a new form of ageism?
Does this devalue the lived experiences and learned wisdom of older people?
