Hi,
Studs are commonly favoured by urban designers or landscape architects in regeneration schemes where there is a desire to retain or use specific paving types and there is a need for tactile paving to be provided. The paving contrast can be achieved and the studs fitted as required. They could work for both controlled and uncontrolled crossings depending on the paving types.
The design of studs has moved on from the early ones I first came across and the profile etc can be a match for the DfT
Standard. A key feature is to provide a knurled finish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knurling) to ensure they are not slippery.
Buying in the studs and choosing specific paving leaves the door open though for mistakes to be made where the requirements are not understood.

Subject: Re: TACTILE STUDS
Hi
I don't have direct experience of using studs but anecdotally they can
become slippery when wet or with wear. But regardless of this it is not
easily possible to provide colour and tonal contrast with the
surrounding paving unless the paving is painted or replaced with a
different colour somewhat defeating the point of using studs in the
first place. If studs are used and an appropriate level of colour and
contrast can be achieved, the profile of the stud must match that given
in the DETR Guidance on the use of Tactile Paving Surfaces.

Subject: TACTILE STUDS
Does anybody have any experience of the use of the various metal and
plastic retro fit tactile studs (blister and corduroy)? Are there any
perceived benefits in using studs rather than a tactile tile? Any
comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
