The other thing I forgot to mention is - it is sometimes worth getting in touch with these providers and asking them for free credit in return for putting a link or logo on the bottom of your emails. I think they're especially open to these kinds of deals for not for profits.
I do this when I run http://bathcamp.org and we've had free emails for about four years now..
