Dear German Studies and all Comparatists,
I am requesting all review editors to commission a review of the following
edited volume:
COMEDY IN COMPARATIVE LITERATURE: Essays on Dante, Hoffman, Nietzsche,
Wharton, Borges and Cabrera Infante
edited by Dr. David Gallagher
This collection of essays examines the very dynamics of comedy, jokes and
laughter. It utilizes theories from early writings of antiquity to
contemporary modern-day fiction. The volume originated from papers given
in the panel session ‘The Joke’s On Us: Comedy, Laughter, and Literature’
at the American Comparative Literature Association Conference at Harvard
University in March 2009. Aspects of comedy have been drawn from a very
diverse European language, literary and historical base to include in
chronological order: the Italian poet of the Medieval Ages, Dante
Alighieri (1265-1321), the German writer, painter, and musical composer E.
T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822), the nineteenth-century German philosopher
Nietzsche (1844-1900), the Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist and
writer of short prose fiction Edith Wharton (1862-1937), the Argentine
essayist, writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), and the Cuban
novelist, fiction writer, essayist and literary critic Guillermo Cabrera
Infante (1929-2005).
Please use the attached form or information below to commission your
review. I can send you a PDF flyer if you like.
Kind Regards,
Dr David Gallagher
