Save the CILT Library!
The library collection at the former premises of CILT (which has recently become part of CfBT and has vacated its London premises) is due to be destroyed unless a way can be found to save it.
This unique collection is of enormous value to the languages community and it should not be lost. It contains books and periodicals going back over forty years, many of which may not be held elsewhere. Nowhere else in the UK can such a comprehensive collection of research material connected to language learning be found.
In the last few days the Association for Language Learning (ALL) and the University of Cambridge Language Centre have been in discussion with Jason Baker and Jonathan Birch of FRP Advisory LLP, the administrators of CILT, over the future of the CILT collection. It is possible for us to buy the core collection now. It would then have to be put in store until a solution regarding its final home can be found, although Cambridge is likely to be able to hold the collection.
All of this will involve substantial costs (expert packing, removal, insurance, storage) and we are asking members of the languages community to please help us TODAY to save the CILT library as neither ALL nor the University of Cambridge Language Centre can cover all these costs in the long term. We have to act now as the library must be cleared in the next few days and the building vacated.
Many of you will have made use of the CILT Library, especially during your training, so please make a donation, however small, to this excellent cause. If you would like to donate call us on 0116 229 7600 and we will take your card details, or send a cheque made payable to ALL to:

Please enclose a note to say that this is a donation to the CILT Library Fund.
ALL will hold the funds raised and if we raise more money than we need for the removal and storage, then the extra will be used to add material to the collection once it is established in its final home.
If there is anyone who knows of an institution or organisation (preferably in London) which might able to offer temporary storage space for the collection (estimated to be three containers 8 feet high by 6 feet wide by 5 feet long) while its future is discussed, please contact ALL on [log in to unmask]
Please forward this message to colleagues in the languages community and help us to SAVE THE CILT LIBRARY!
