Please forgive this intrusion into the List, but I am seeking informed advice on finding a paid position as an Assistant Archivist (in training) through which I would be able to concurrently pursue a distance Archives Administration qualification.
I possess a PhD, MA, BA, all in the History of Art, Design & Architecture, with very good experience in the use, transcription and interpretation of original documents for my MA and PhD level work in the history of ceramics, ceramics manufacturing, family history, Nazi-era aryanization of Jewish property. To part-fund my PhD I worked for two years in a commercial photographic archive specialising in architecture in London.
I have now been volunteering for the National Trust in the archiving area for about three years, working with some photographs, but primarily cataloguing artefacts and original documents in some of the NT country houses in Surrey and Sussex. Because the collection I have been working on since last September, however, still belongs to the host family rather than the Trust, I am not at liberty to identify more than some of the types of documents and artefacts involved:
Some discoveries have included historical portraiture, porcelain vases, paintings, military paraphernalia and medals, children's toys, books, family photographic albums, correspondence and estate records dating from around 1765 forward, etc. Recently, a small trunk of about 30 original historical documents was discovered. The majority of these documents date to the late 18th century, however the oldest dates back to 1598. These include financial statements, last wills and testaments, maps and blueprints, and royal charters and indentures, some on vellum, some of the later ones on paper; many in English, but a number in Latin.
If anyone has any advice whatsoever about locating a paid training post in archiving, please do not hesitate in making suggestions. I look at ARC and elsewhere consistently, but many of these posts seem to be un-advertised.
With much thanks !
Judith
