PHD PROJECT TITLE: What are the chances? An explication of single-case chance
Project funded by NWO, the Dutch organisation for scientific research
University of Groningen, The Netherlands, 2011-2016
INTRODUCTION
This research project targets the concept of chances: numbers between 0 and 1 that can be assigned to events and that do not express a shaky personal opinion, but rather an objective characteristic of the events themselves. In the project we investigate how chances relate to the, often deterministic, mechanisms underlying the events, thereby contributing to debates over the reference class problem, randomness, and reductionism. Additionally, the research will help to improve the statistical methods by which we can determine chances, especially in the area of model selection and causal modelling using Bayesian networks.
The leader of the research project is Jan-Willem Romeijn. He is assistant professor on a tenure-track at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen, where he teaches philosophy of science. His research interests include scientific method, the foundations of statistics, inductive logic, and causal modelling.
