The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) is the UK's leading society devoted to advancing the science and application of statistics, and promoting use and awareness for public benefit. A charity founded in 1834, it is now one of the most influential and prestigious statistical societies in the world, with a global membership. The aim of the RSS is to nurture the study and application of statistics, to promote its value to wider society, and to serve the interests of those involved in these activities. The Society publishes internationally renowned journals and other publications, has an extensive programme of meetings and is now central to a new 10 year statistical literacy campaign called getstats.
There is a growing and diverse membership of over 7000 to whom the c.20 RSS staff provide a highly professional and committed service.
The Role
Reporting to the elected President and accountable to Council, the Executive Director is responsible for shaping and implementing the Society's strategy. He/she will provide inspirational leadership to the RSS team in support of overall policy priorities and work programmes. Key responsibilities include:
* to build upon solid foundations and to position the Society for further growth;
* to develop business plans, to set and achieve ambitious goals;
* to manage financial budgets including planning, control and reporting;
* to deliver and expand effective services to members and users of statistics;
* to be able to identify and optimise opportunities to raise the profile and to expand the sphere of influence of the RSS and to generate additional funds.
The Candidate
The Executive Director will:
* have senior management and leadership experience, perhaps within a volunteer based or public sector organisation;
* be able to establish personal credibility and positive working relations with the President and Council and to inspire, motivate, delegate to or support colleagues and volunteers as appropriate;
* have track-record in business management and transforming business through IT and web technology projects
* have excellent negotiating and networking skills, and be able to represent the views of the RSS in the public and private sector, and to government.
