The use of mathematics has profound consequences in all walks of life, but the opportunities that it opens up often go unrecognised or underexploited. The TakeAIM competition will make visible the crucial role that mathematics plays and will increasingly play in all aspects of our lives. It is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students in the mathematical sciences who wish to convey the potential influence of their work.
The Industrial Mathematics KTN, enabled by the generous sponsorship of Unilever, ARM, NAG and Willis, is offering two iPads as prizes for the best examples of articulating the influence of mathematical research to a wider audience.
Each entry to the competition must be based upon a piece of research that the entrant has been directly involved in carrying out, explaining:
- what is the idea behind the piece of research?
- why is it novel?
- what is its potential influence, and on whom?
Entrants must be registered for a first or higher degree at a UK university on 30 June 2011. They need not be working in a department of mathematics, but their research must be mathematical in nature. Entries can be drawn from all areas of pure and applied mathematics, statistics or operational research. It is anticipated that in many cases the research that underpins entries will be work in progress.
For further information including details on how to apply, terms and conditions, please visit https://ktn.innovateuk.org/web/mathsktn/articles/-/blogs/takeaim-to-win-an-ipad-2 . The closing date for entries is 30th June 2011.
Good Luck!
