MeCCSA-Postgraduate Network call for nominations
The MeCCSA-Postgraduate Network is calling for nominations for its executive committee for the 2011-2012 academic year. Elections will be held at the upcoming annual conference at Bournemouth University on 4 July – 5 July. The officer’s roles are described below:
Chair
The chair is responsible for the day-to-day running of the network, chairing all executive meetings and representing the network at the main MeCCSA Executive meetings. The main duties and responsibilities include attendance and representation at the executive meetings of MeCCSA, ensuring the successful coordination of all MeCCSA-PGN events and activities, and liaising between the PGN membership, the PGN executive board and the main body of MeCCSA.
Secretary/Vice-Chair
The secretary is responsible for keeping records of post-graduate network activities. The main duties and responsibilities include minute taking at meetings of the PGN (3 per year) and the subsequent circulation of those minutes among the PGN executive committee, as well as circulating other information pertinent to the committee's operation. In circumstances when the Chair is unable to chair meetings, the Secretary fills this role.
Training
The role includes assisting the conference committee in its invitation of appropriate guest speakers for training workshops at the forthcoming MeCCSA-PG conferences.
The Training Officer also monitors and researches contemporary issues relevant for PG-training in order to codify newsletters in conjunction with the Communications Director. The newsletter should provide useful information on current events and developments (e.g. CFPs, workshops, job advertisements, funding opportunities, professional training and requirements like Initial Teaching Award (short course) and PGCE etc.) for PG students and early postdoctoral researchers. The information should also be placed on a regularly updated training section on the homepage of the PG network (which has still to be developed).
The Training Officer would also work together with PGN members and their home institutions if they wished to set up training events for postgraduates.
Finally, the Training position demands to host of a training event at the position holder’s home university.
Outreach
The Outreach officer of the MeCCSA-PGN operates as a liaison between the committee board and postgraduates who require support and assistance from the MeCCSA-PGN. As an Outreach officer you can expect to be the first point of contact for many postgraduates approaching the committee and serve as a signposting for any help that the board can offer. You will also co-ordinate the organisation of one networking event per year, developing ideas for these events and encouraging network members to put-forward ideas and get involved in organising such events. You will also develop ideas by which to promote the network and encourage further postgraduate and ECR participation in the network.
Communications
The Communications Officer is responsible for planning, developing and delivering the web-based communications of the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network. The main duties and responsibilities include circulating information on upcoming events relevant to the postgraduate community, updating the website with information on all the activities of the PG network and uploading bi-annual issues of Networking Knowledge, the journal of the MeCCSA PGN. Experience working with a CMS and basic knowledge of HTML is a plus.
Journal Editor
Networking Knowledge is the publication of the MeCCSA-PGN and provides postgraduates with the opportunity to have their work reviewed, fed-back and disseminated. As Journal Editor you will have the responsibility for the day-to-day running of the journal. These duties include issuing a call for papers both in relation to the annual conference and another issue during the year, as well as supervising a peer-reviewing process which includes guidance for the reviewing of papers and delivery of feedback. The editor will also identify postgraduates to serve on a panel of peer reviewers (which already exists but can be added to), assign reviewers for submitted articles and ensure that all articles are reviewed according to agreed standards. The editor will liaise with a counterpart on the committee for the annual conference for the publication of that edition.
