CFP – The New National Image: Popular Geopolitics versus Nation Branding (AAG 2012)
I am currently seeking fellow panelists for the AAG Annual Meeting in New York (24-28 February 2012). The theme I would like to explore is how popular media depictions of space, places, and peoples inform and interrupt the branding efforts of nation-states. By positing popular geopolitics and nation branding as opposing forces, I am interested in putting together a group of scholars to explore the tension between national self-image and external perceptions of the nation, and the role that mass-mediated geographies play in contemporary formations of national image.
Suggested topics include:
* Place and nation branding
* Combating negative national stereotypes via new media
* Global news media and national stereotypes
* National tourism campaigns
* Eurovision entries and politics
* Film/TV’s impact on national identity
* Superheroes and super villains as avatars of the nation
* Neoliberalism and marketing the nation
* Music as the ‘soul’ of the nation
* Sport and national identity
If you are interested in joining the panel, please email me at [log in to unmask] Please be aware that all participants, except non-attending co-authors, must pay the appropriate participation fee to AAG before submitting an abstract.
