They were introduced in IBM Fortran IV in 1961, having become
necessary because of the advent of DOUBLE PRECISION, COMPLEX
and LOGICAL. Fortran was spreading outside IBM in the early
1960s and the 1966 standard was basically a common subset of
vendors' offerings at the time,
