The next meeting of the London Anthropology
Forum<http://anthropologytoday.ning.com/xn/detail/4114864:Event:15107?xg_source=activity>will
be held on Saturday May 7th from 12.00 noon until 14.00 hrs. It will
be
hosted by the Anthropology department at SOAS and held in the Senior Common
Room at SOAS.
The working title for the discussion is:
*Anthropological perspectives on the responsibilities of academics in the
managerial age?*
Introduction to theme:
Knowledge is now treated as a commodity. Original ideas are only valuable in
terms of their saleability. While the emphasis is on a traditional
disciplinary focus in the research assessment exercise and treating
departments as cost centres, what students need are 'soft', flexible skills
to adapt to rapidly changing technological and employment opportunities.
Different understandings of accountability, quality and excellence inform
the approaches of managers and academics.
Ways of imagining the future university at a time when 'welfare state
occupations' are being de-professionalised. Ways of moving beyond the ‘audit
culture’.
