Post Doctoral Research Assistant in Earth Sciences
Marine Physics and Ocean Climate, National Oceanography Centre, Liverpool
The National Oceanography Centre, part of the Natural Environment Research
Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine
science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the
top five institutions of its kind in the world.
With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading centre for
sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology
development. Working closely with its partners and associates it provides
capability to meet the needs across the UK marine science community.
We invite applications for a researcher in Earth Sciences to work on a
NERC-funded consortium "Using Inter-Glacials to Assess Future Sea-Level
Scenarios (iGlass)", consisting of seven institutes, three non-academic
partners and four overseas academic partners and advisors. The consortium
will study the response of ice volume/sea level to different climate
states during the last five inter-glacials, which include periods with
significantly higher sea level than the present.
As a researcher in the iGlass consortium, you will combine observations of
past sea levels and estimates of ice sheet variations with solid earth
modelling to develop an integrated understanding of the total sea-level
change during these periods and the relative contributions from the
Greenland and (West) Antarctic ice sheets.
You should possess a PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline
and be an experienced researcher with strong programming and statistical
skills. You should have the ability to analyse large data sets, have
well-developed self- and time-management skills and be able to communicate
clearly, both orally and in writing. You will work within the Marine
Physics and Ocean Climate group at the NOC under the guidance of Dr Mark
Tamisiea and Dr Svetlana Jevrejeva, and will interact with Dr Glenn Milne
(University of Ottawa) and other members of the iGlass consortium.
The post is a three-year, fixed–term position and is available from 1
October 2011. The salary will be in the range of £26,180 to £29,410 per
annum.
General enquiries only, (please do not send CVs) should be directed to Dr.
Mark Tamisiea ([log in to unmask]). Please send Dr. Tamisiea a short message
after applying online.
NERC provide benefits that include a RCUK pension scheme and generous
leave scheme offering up to 30 days leave and a further 10 1/2
Public/privilege days. Opportunities for further training and development
are supported.
