Dear Stephen Marshall,
I have been sent this email about writing a short paper for your
journal through a circuitous route.
I'm involved in the Incredible Edible Todmorden campaign, which
champions new ways of viewing the urban environment through the
production and distribution of food. I would be very interested in
writing a short piece for your journal giving a users perspective on
the urban environment.
Two questions: Firstly, would a paper on this be of interest to you?
And secondly, when is your deadline, please?
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes,
Carol

>>
>> /Urban Design and Planning/ journal invites authors to submit 'User
>> Perspectives' - a kind of short briefing paper which addresses the
>> built environment in relation to particular users - especially
>> under-represented groups - as opposed to the more typically
>> represented perspective of the urban researcher, professional
>> designer or planner, local authority official or promoter.
>>
>> Users could be defined in a variety of ways such as:
>> - age group (children, teenagers, older people, etc.)
>> - physical ability (partially sighted, wheelchair user, etc.)
>> - transport mode (pedestrian, skateboarder, cyclist, etc.)
>> - 'marginal' users of public space (informal street trader, rough
>> sleeper, etc.)
>> - residents of particular kinds of development (slums, gated
>> communities, trailer parks, tower blocks, etc.)
>> - public users in particular situations (public trying to get
>> rights of way through private developments, etc.)
>>
>> A recent example of this kind of User Perspective paper:
>> Clavin, A. (2011) How and why children use ecological urban space,
>> in /Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Urban Design
>> and Planning/ 164 March 2011 Issue DP1, Pages 7–9 doi:
>> 10.1680/udap.1000012. This paper is accessible to journal
>> subscribers at:
>>
>> The original editorial setting out the aim of this kind of paper:
>> Marshall, S. (2008) ‘Them and us'—thinking of the user, in
>> /Proceedings of the ICE - Urban Design and Planning/, Volume 161,
>> Issue DP22, pages 45–45 , ISSN: 1755-0793, E-ISSN: 1755-0807. This
>> paper is freely accessible at:
>>
>> The 'User Perspective' is a particular kind of briefing paper
>> published in ICE Proceedings journals generally. As an alternative
>> to full academic papers, briefing papers offer the chance of
>> relatively quick publication. Briefings are short, topical, useful,
>> relevant, authoritative and reflective. Briefing papers should be
>> from around 600 words plus one image (making 1 page) to around 1800
>> words plus three images (making 3 pages). Full guidelines are here:
>>
>> Publication in /Urban Design and Planning/ allows you to reach a
>> wide international audience of readers across a range of
>> disciplines: urban planners, urban designers, engineers and other
>> built environment professionals. The journal is read by both
>> academics and practitioners, and so has a good potential for
>> creating 'impact' in practice as well as exposure in academic
>> spheres. More information for potential authors is here:
