LOS ANGELES - Opening day at Dodger Stadium turned violent when
authorities say two men in Dodgers clothing severely beat a San Francisco
Giants fan after the longtime rival teams' first game.
The attack left the victim in critical but stable condition as authorities
asked any possible witnesses Friday for help in identifying the
assailants. Investigators also reviewed footage of the Thursday incident
to see if any security camera captured it, but Detective Larry Burcher
said so far they'd found "nothing of great value."
"We're very confident there were witnesses, it happened immediately
following the game when everybody was coming out," Burcher said.

Bryan Stow, the Santa Cruz, Calif., resident who was beaten in the Dodger
Stadium parking lot on opening day on Thursday, is still in critical
condition and "showing signs of brain damage" according to a Los Angeles
County-USC Medical Center neurosurgeon.

Dr. Gabriel Zada said Stow remains in a coma and that he's showing signs
of "brain injury and dysfunction."

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Police Det. Jose Carrillo said investigators are
checking an unconfirmed report that three men in Giants gear were struck
by the same attackers before Stow was knocked to the ground and hit his
head on the pavement.
The fund to help identify and capture the two assailants has grown to
$100,000, according to the Los Angeles Times. On Tuesday the Los Angeles
City Council voted to offer a $50,000 reward for information leading to
the arrest and conviction of the suspects. On Monday, the Dodgers put up
$25,000, which doubled the money already collected.

According to police, two men in Dodgers clothing followed three men
wearing Giants gear to their car, yelled slurs against the Giants and then
began kicking and punching the men. The most seriously hurt of the victims
was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

A Dodgers official said that fights and incidents in the stands were down
considerably, because of a visible increase in police and security
presence.

"It is extremely unfortunate that this incident took place on what was
otherwise a great day at Dodger Stadium for tens of thousands of fans,"
read an official statement from the team.

The victim has been identified in published reports as 42-year-old Santa
Cruz resident Bryan Stow. He had reportedly attended the game with three
friends, at least some of whom work with him at American Medical Response
in San Mateo where Stow is employed as a paramedic.

Two men in Dodgers clothing were exchanging barbed comments with three men
in Giants gear as thousands of baseball fans left the stadium after
Thursday night's 2-1 Dodger victory, Detective T.J. Moore said.

The Giants fans tried to distance themselves from their assailants, and
two made it away from them, but one was struck with fists on the back of
the head and as he fell, his head hit the ground in Parking Lot 2 on the
third base side of the ballpark, Moore said.

Both attackers then kicked the victim, who suffered a head injury, and
ran, Moore said. When the victim's friends turned around to look for him,
they saw him on the ground and made their way back to him.

Police paramedics on bicycles were the first to arrive to help the victim.
An ambulance was called and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital,
Moore said.

Edwin M. Lee, LAPD chief Charlie Beck, SFPD interim chief Jeff Godown,

This attack is unconscionable behavior that will not be tolerated in
either of our ballparks or in either of our cities. Once apprehended, the
attackers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Public
safety is the top priority for all of us and even one act of random
violence is unacceptable.

Baseball is a family sport that has unified our country after times of
crisis and tragedy. This senseless act of violence has no place in our
society and certainly not in our national pastime.

The Giant/Dodger rivalry is one of the most storied in all of sports,
dating back to when the teams played across town in New York City before
their moves to California. This is a great rivalry between teams competing
on the field of play. That's where it must stay.

We call on our respective citizens to stand together in honor of that

and do so with civility and common decency.

Assault victim Bryan Stow, a 40-year-old Santa Cruz paramedic with two
small children who had travelled south to cheer on the Giants, is still in
a medically induced coma at the County-USC Medical Center.

County superviser Mike Antonovich just posted a $10,000 reward for
information leading to their arrest. Here are the clues so far, via City
News Service:

Los Angeles police have released composite sketches of the two attackers,
who were 18-25 years old, wearing Dodgers attire and had shaved heads and
thin mustaches. One had a small goatee, and the other had numerous tattoos
on his neck.
The suspects were driven away by a woman, and a small boy was also in the
light-colored, four-door car, police said.

The cousin of a San Francisco Giants fan who was severely beaten in a
Dodger Stadium parking lot by two people wearing Dodgers gear issued a
call for civility Tuesday among sports fans, and thanked well-wishers
across the country who expressed support for the man and his family.

Bryan Stow, a 42-year-old paramedic and married father of two, remains in
a comatose state and in critical condition at Los Angeles County-USC
Medical Center. Police were still searching for the two men who attacked
him after the Dodgers' opening-day victory over the Giants Thursday.

"Our family and friends would also like to thank everyone around the
nation for their support and prayers of Bryan,'' Stow's cousin, John Stow,
told reporters outside the hospital.
.
"To know that people who have never met Bryan could care so much about him
and his well-being has truly been overwhelming. Though this has been a
terrible tragedy done by cowardly people, it is reassuring to know that
good people are speaking out and are appalled.

"We would like to use this as a rallying cry to stop unnecessary violence
in our greatest pastime and all other sports, not only here but abroad,''
said Stow, who wore a Giants hat and jersey as he spoke.

"This would be one of the greatest gifts you could give to us, especially
Bryan. So I ask for one last thing on behalf of Bryan - that we all enjoy

A San Francisco Giants fan who was kicked and beaten by two attackers in a
Dodger Stadium parking lot had to be returned to a medically induced coma
over the weekend and is expected to remain unconscious for at least
another week, hospital officials said Monday.

Surgeons at County-USC Medical Center on Friday reduced Bryan Stow's
coma-inducing medication, allowing the 42-year-old father of two to regain
consciousness for the first time since the March 31 assault left him with
a fractured skull and brain damage.

But on Saturday morning, Stow, a Santa Clara, Calif.-area paramedic, began
having seizures, said Rosa Saca, hospital spokeswoman. Given the potential
damage from the seizures, neurosurgeons decided to return Stow to a coma
for a week. "He remains in critical condition," Saca said.

Members of Stow's family, who have pleaded with the public to help
detectives find his attackers, continue to be at his bedside daily. His
two children, Tyler, 12, and Tabitha, 8, remain in the Santa Cruz area.

A $150,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest
and conviction of the assailants. Despite dozens of tips from witnesses,
investigators said, they continue to seek a break in the case.

With Stow's assault becoming national news, the LAPD and Dodgers last week
beefed up the number of officers patrolling the stadium and parking lot.
Officers on horseback, bicycle and foot stood guard. In addition, 43 light
stands were added to the parking lot on the advice of former LAPD Chief
William J. Bratton, whose firm was hired to advise the team on security
improvements.

On Wednesday, Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig took the sports
world by surprise when he made the "extraordinary and historic"
announcement that he would appoint a trustee to oversee the day-to-day
operations of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers have been in precarious
financial shape for years - owner Frank McCourt, who took over the team in
2004, originally financed his purchase by taking out tens of millions of
dollars in loans, and has been deep in debt ever since. His high-profile
divorce, meanwhile, became a public spectacle that threw the franchise's
future into doubt, and his public-relations nightmare continued when two
Dodgers fans brutally assaulted a visiting Giants fan last month, putting
him into a coma. When the owner took out yet another huge loan - $30
million - Selig intervened. The league will now "essentially foreclose on
Frank McCourt," says Dave Cameron at FanGraphs, and search for a more
financially responsible owner. Was this the right move?

Good riddance to a terrible owner: Thanks to Frank McCourt's inept
leadership, "Dodgers fans have been wandering through a desert of
uncertainty and dismay" for a long time, says Jon Weisman at ESPN. His
tenure has been marked by "rising parking fees," "inconsistent spending on
players," and "appalling revelations of greed in court documents related
to McCourt's divorce." The beating of a Giants fan was just another last
straw in a long series of last straws.

More than half a century after the great betrayal, Los Angeles and
Brooklyn can finally agree on something about the Dodgers: that Major
League Baseball's takeover of the team's finances and operations from
beleaguered and cash-strapped owner Frank McCourt is welcome news.
Although not, of course, for the same reasons.

For the team's rapidly dwindling (attendance is down by 6,000 per game
this year from last) Angeleno fan base, Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig's
action is being hailed as promising a change in ownership and the end of
the McCourt regime. The owners have worn out whatever welcome they once
enjoyed-which they did when Frank and now-estranged wife Jamie flew in
from Boston in 2004 (of all places for the savior of a Los Angeles
institution to come from) to deliver the team from Fox, whose
synergy-driven business plan had failed to deliver the numbers to make it
work financially and which was then being blamed for the team's woes.
