The Society of Biology is looking for an Assistant Editor for its two key publications, The Biologist and the Journal of Biological Education (JBE). Working with our volunteer Editors of both journals and their respective Editorial Boards to ensure that the Society makes the most of its publishing capability, and is consistent and effective with the way the journals are delivered.

Salary: £25,000
Key responsibilities:
1. Acting as the main contact for both publications with regard to the publishing company, editorial staff, authors, potential authors, the two Editors and the two Editorial Boards; co-ordinating activity and checking on progress of each publication; administering the peer review systems; seeing all proofs and ensuring timely delivery; working with the Director to develop the current publications and expanding portfolio
2. Research and write feature articles and interviews for The Biologist; gathering relevant material for the Society news and branch pages of The Biologist
3. Co-ordinating the book review process; sending out sample copies and pdf’s on request; sending thank-you letters and offprints to authors
4. Uploading each issue to the Society’s website
5. Servicing the Editorial Board / Publications Committee, including organising and running the meetings
6. Overseeing the expansion of the SB’s image library
7. Responsible for the main administrative duties of the magazine
8. Carrying out such other duties as may be required from time to time
Person Specification:
Qualifications:
• Degree or equivalent – essential. The qualification does not need to be in a biological science, however an interest in science is required.
Experience:
• At least 2 years’ experience in a publishing environment – essential
• At least 2 years’ journalistic experience - desirable
• Experience using an online peer review system - desirable
Skills:
• First-class writing and interviewing skills
• Able to communicate with people at all levels
• Excellent eye for detail
• Highly computer literate
• Excellent at working under pressure and to tight deadlines
• A good eye for design and layout
