I think that Kimmeridge shale has been worked at various periods, but know
little of the subject. This came up in connection with a fieldwalking find,
which was eventually identified as bakelite.

Subject: C18 Oil Shale uses
Dear List,
I've just found a piece of what looks like oil shale in an early-mid C18
context in St Helier, Jersey.
Does anyone know what it was being exported for, and from where, in the
post-medieval period?
The nearest source known to me is the Christchurch/Poole/Wareham area in
east Dorset/west Hampshire.
