How is management of change using ‘lean’ methods implemented and understood in different departments and services within a large acute NHS hospital trust?
Applications are invited for this studentship. The academic supervisors are Dr Stephen Timmons (Nursing) and Dr Hannah Noke (Nottingham University Business School). The PhD will focus on processes of change in the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Health services world-wide face increased pressures to control costs while simultaneously improving quality and efficiency. An approach that has been used extensively in business is ‘lean thinking’. Lean methods are seen as involving a fundamental cultural change from traditional NHS ways of working, and are now being implemented throughout Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, in areas as diverse as the Emergency Department, operating theatres, children’s services, imaging and finance, among others. This represents a unique opportunity to study large scale change in an NHS Trust, based on a method derived ultimately from industry. Using a mixed-method, case study approach, this project will seek to; analyse how staff understand the lean change process, and ideas about inefficiency; investigate how lean methods will alter ways of working, and compare how a hospital-wide process is implemented in different areas. This project may be of interest to students with a background in management, the health care professions, sociology, social anthropology or other social science and health care disciplines.
This studentship is available from 1 October 2011 and will pay tuition fees for three years. This studentship will also provide an annual tax-free maintenance grant to the student.
