medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is going way back to an earlier discussion. Chris, do you (or does anyone else) have a reference for Cistercian acceptance of burials in church from the C13? And is there anything on burial of lay people in Cistercian churches or elsewhere in the precincts? I'm working on some incised cross slabs in south Wales and struggling with conflicting dating evidence. If I could say with some certainty 'this style is found in a Cistercian church therefore it's unlikely to be before ....', it would help.
Best wishes
Maddy

> As to burials in chapter houses, that depends a lot on an order's attitude
towards burials. The Cistercians, I believe, initially forbade burials in
their churches but relented in a big way from the 13th century onwards
i would again mention the (c. 1150) sculptural remains of the tomb of Abbot
Hugh of Macon in the eastern nave (or choir, but before the late 12th c.
hemicycle) of Pontigny.
