medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Cecilia, lectures on this subject which may be suffering from excessive
dryness might find some hydrationary relief in what must surely be the best
fictional treatment of the phenomenon --Zoe Oldenbourg's _Destiny of Fire_.
i have always thought that all her medieval novels were rather well founded on
both historical and (primary) literary sources, and, in this one (her best, by
far), she definitely tells the story from the Southern point of view --she's
nothing if not the Margaret Mitchell of the c. 1200 Languedoc culture.
a bit hard to find (it, unlike her Champagne novels, was never a BotMC
selection), but worth the effort and highly recommended.

sometime in the past reading some really evocative poetry reflecting local
sentiments -- exhaustion at war, fear of the northerners, local sadness --
written by Languedoc troubadours, and had thought to work with some of these
with my students. But I have no idea where I read them, or in what language.
These would have to be in translation (this is for a history class). I had
thought they were in Throop's Criticism of Crusade, but have
just retrieved it from the stacks and am not finding what I'd wanted. Does
anyone know where to find these? Or really, find just one. Just one good poem
to give some voice to the south. Otherwise, this is a very dry and very
northern lecture.
