Prominent US writers headline Reading and Wellbeing Conference in Merseyside
on 17th May
Pulitzer and Orange Prize-winning Marilynne Robinson, author of Gilead and
Home, and Professor Maryanne Wolf, author of Proust and the Squid, will be
headline speakers at The Reader Organisation's ‘Reading for Wellbeing
‘Conference, to be held at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton, Wirral on
Tuesday, 17th May 2011.
“I am very excited to be taking part in the conference, and to be visiting
Merseyside in particular. It’s great to see reading being used for the
benefit of both mental and physical health, and I’m keen to discover more
about The Reader Organisation’s work.” Marilynne Robinson
The conference will bring GPs, librarians, teachers, psychiatrists and other
health professionals, care home workers and probation officers together in a
wide-range of stimulating talks and discussion groups based on the impacts
of the charity's Get Into Reading project. The conference is being held in
Wirral to celebrate the fact that there are over 100 Get Into Reading groups
taking place each week across the borough, reaching people from 3 to 93.
“Our work is based on creating relationships between people and literature,
and we're leading a revolution to change the reading habits of the nation.
It's really exciting to have these two internationally acclaimed writers
speaking at our conference to help us further spread that revolution and to
be holding the event in Wirral, where we have our largest Get Into Reading
project.” Jane Davis, Director of The Reader Organisation
New research, ‘Therapeutic Benefits of Reading in Relation to Depression’,
by The Reader Organisation in collaboration with Liverpool Health
Inequalities Research Unit at the University of Liverpool will also be
presented. This evidences the impact of Get Into Reading, demonstrating that
it is a combination of the quality of literature and the skill of
experienced reading facilitators that can engage new readers and deliver
health and educational outcomes.
Other guest speakers include Professor Rick Rylance (Chair, AHRC) and Sue
Charteris (Director, Shared Intelligence), and Alan Yates (CEO, Mersey Care
NHS Trust). Discussion groups and seminars will include the impact of Get
Into Reading for looked-after children, people in the criminal justice
system and those living with dementia.
'Reading for Wellbeing' is the charity’s second national conference, and it
is open for anyone to attend. It takes place on Tuesday 17th May, 9am – 5pm
in the Floral Pavilion, Marine Promenade, New Brighton, Wirral, CH45 2JS.
Tickets cost £90 for the full day, including lunch and refreshments (£67.50
for Read to Lead trainees).
