Living With Difference in Europe: Public Guest Lecture by Professor Richard Sennett (New York University & LSE)
Tuesday 10th May 2011, 5 pm, at the University of Leeds. This lecture will be followed by a wine reception.
Professor Gill Valentine and the ‘LIVEDIFFERENCE’ research team are pleased to invite you to this public event which will launch the four-year research programme ‘Living with Difference in Europe: making communities out of strangers in an era of super mobility and super diversity’.
The research, funded by the European Research Council, will explore the extent and nature of everyday encounters with ‘difference’ through five inter-linked projects. The research is being carried out in the UK (a post-colonial European state) and Poland (a post-communist European state). Further information about the research programme is available at http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/projects/livedifference/.
Starting at 5 pm, this event, which will bring together people from academia, research, community groups / charities and local government, will be opened by the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Professor Andrew Thompson. Professor Richard Sennett will give the keynote lecture, relating to aspects of ‘difference’ and there will be opportunity for questions from the floor. Delegates are also invited to stay for a wine reception afterwards.
Attendance is free of charge, but places are limited by the size of the venue so early registration is recommended. If you would like to attend this event, please email Alison Suckall at [log in to unmask] giving your name, organisation and contact details. Details of the venue will be included in your registration confirmation.
*Richard Sennett writes about cities, labour, and culture. He teaches sociology at New York University, USA and at the London School of Economics (http://www.richardsennett.com/site/SENN/Templates/Home.aspx?pageid=1). ‘Difference’ is identified in relation to the equality strands of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion/belief, disability, age and social class.
