School of Ocean and Earth Science


The School of Ocean and Earth Science forms the University component of activity at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.  The Centrerepresents an unparalleled investment in marine and Earth science and technology in the UK. It opened in 1995 in a purpose-built waterfront campus in a collaboration between the University of Southampton and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The Centre houses around 500 staff.  The School of Ocean and Earth Science comprises about 120 staff, 600 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate students. We have highly regarded degree programmes at all levels across the full range of Ocean and Earth Sciences, including strong undergraduate programmes in Geology and Geophysics. The School forms part of the new Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, along with the Schools of Chemistry and Biological Sciences.

We have a diverse range of excellent laboratory, computing and seagoing facilities. The Centre provides a unique intellectual environment for conducting world-class research and fortraining the next generation of scientists for a wide range of careers. TheSchool is in an exciting phase of recruitment in which we plan to make multiple academic appointments over the next few years. We are therefore interested to receive expressions of interest from high-quality individuals in all areas of ocean and Earth science in addition to the areas specified below.  For Lectureship positions (equivalent to tenure-track assistant professor), we are interested in recruiting early-career individuals with growing international reputations for research excellence and with theambition to become international leaders in their fields.


Lectureship in Earth Science: Ref 5357-11-F

Salary £27,428-44,016 per annum

Research in Earth science is underpinned by world-class facilities in geochemistry, palaeoceanography and sedimentary geology. We seek to complement our existing strengths by recruiting individuals who creatively apply observational, experimental, numerical modelling, and/or theoretical approaches in any area across the full spectrum of Earthscience. We are particularly interested in applicants with a research focus on earth surface processes or petroleum geology.

Lectureship in Geophysics: Ref 5358-11-F

Salary £27,428-44,016 per annum

Research in Geophysics is underpinned by world-class facilities for seabed geophysics, high-resolution geophysics and palaeomagnetism, together with computer clusters within the School and University.  Existing strengths in geophysics include exploration geophysics, tectonics, seismology and palaeomagnetism.  However, we welcome applications from observationalists or modellers across all areas of geophysics.

Lectureship or Fixed-Term Lectureship in Marine Electromagnetics: Ref 5359-11-F

Salary £27,428-44,016 per annum

We seek to expand and develop ourworld-leading group in marine electromagnetics.  Research in this area is underpinned by a deep-towed electromagneticsource, a suite of seabed instruments jointly operated with the University of Durham through the UK Ocean Bottom Instrumentation Consortium, and state-of-the-art codes for data analysis.  During an initial 3-year period, this post is partly supported by the National Oceanography Centre linked to funded electromagnetic surveys in 2011 and 2012.  Candidates with less experience than normally required for a lectureship will be considered for the fixed-term position, which will be for a period of up to three years.

You must have a PhD at the time of appointment and a proven ability to publish innovative, high-quality research. Emphasis will be placed on your track record of publications and grant capture commensurate to career stage and your ability to develop a dynamic, externally funded research program with an international profile. We welcome applications both from those who pursue fundamental research and from those who have the potential to develop applied research and closer links with industry. You will have a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, including field training in geology or geophysics and a desire to engage indoctoral student supervision by capitalising on the opportunities presented by our large Graduate School.
