Hello Rachel,
This seems quite unusual - I've used identical commands here with the FSL 4.1.7 binaries, and the output is a spherical mask, as expected.
Can you confirm that point_mask contains a single non-zero voxel and check what the output of the second fslmaths call without the -bin option is?
